describing one of the fertility cults of the Great Place |
The House's primary responsibility is for the fertility of arable crops (because of the identification of the phallus with the plough). This responsibility also extends to the construction and maintenance of irrigation canals, in which aspect the Cock co-operates with the Foot.
The fertility rites of the Cock include events in the fields and orchards to be blessed, in which villages compete to provide the largest possible number of fertile partners for the officiating priest. Similar mass public couplings are held in the theatre in the City in early spring, representing the fertilisation of the place itself.
The vestments of the priests consist primarily of an exaggerated cod piece, often brightly coloured and richly embroidered, or studded with metal and jewels. In warm weather, the priest may wear nothing else. However, more usually skin-tight leggings, usually black, are worn; a tight jersey, usually high necked, is common in cooler weather. Priests of the Cock may also wear boots, leather belts and armbands, but never the elaborate harness of the Cunt.
The House of the Cock is widely perceived as being almost an appendage of the much wealthier and more influential Cunt, with which it is closely associated. No-one fears the Cock, which is not perceived as ambitious.
